Dharmapuri: Directorate of Teacher Education Research and Training, Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society and UNICEF conducted a one-day sensitisation workshop on School Adolescent Education Programme for Headmasters of government and private higher secondary schools in the district on Friday. Inaugurating the workshop, Collector P. Amudha said that peer educators and teachers created awareness among 14 lakh students in 9,423 schools in the State under the programme so far. The selected teachers would conduct 16 hours structured co-curricular sessions on life skills for all students in Standard IX and XI in government and private higher secondary schools in Dharmapuri district. The School Adolescent Education programme would focus on building effective communication skills, on resisting peer pressure to indulge in potentially hazardous behaviour, assertiveness, managing emotions and helps them develop good knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention and care so that they can have an accurate risk assessment to protect themselves. Sources in the Department of Education point out that peer educators would be trained on how to communicate with peer groups on adoption of safe sexual practices and help them develop good knowledge about HIV and AIDS. The main objective of the programme is to encourage youth to indulge in safe behaviour and to create positive peer pressure to help them openly discuss about AIDS. As many as 182 headmasters and teachers attended the workshop.
