Karnataka water board MD has assets worth Rs. 10 crore: Lokayuta

Staff Reporter

The Lokayukta found Rs. 1.09 crore in the family’s bank accounts

Reddy joined the board as Assistant Executive Engineer in 1967

BANGALORE: Close on the heels of a series of searches of the houses of 13 government officials earlier this month, the Lokayuta police carried out a similar operation on Saturday and found B. Srinivasa Reddy, Managing Director, Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), possessing assets worth more than Rs. 10 crore. This is one of the most impressive recoveries from a government servant and the search is continuing.

Additional Director-General of Police (Lokayukta) R.K. Datta told presspersons that the search followed a tip-off that Mr. Reddy’s alleged wealth far exceeded his legitimate income. The simultaneous searches covered Mr. Reddy’s house in Sadashivanagar, mother-in-law Chowdamma’s house in Indiranagar and the ashram he runs in Anekal taluk of Bangalore Rural district.

Mr. Reddy, who stays in a rented house in Sadashivanagar, has let out a house in BTM Layout 8th Main, which is in his daughter Rashmi’s name. Next door is a serviced apartment in wife Manjula’s name. The sleuths found records pertaining to a site each in Sadashivanagar, Koramangala, HRBR Layout and Indiranagar owned by the three. The Lokayukta police found Rs. 1.09 crore in seven bank accounts by the family, including Mr. Reddy’s son. While Rs. 50 lakh was found in his two accounts, Rs. 53 lakh was in Ms. Manjula’s name. Also, Rs. 30.77 lakh in cash, 10 kg of silver articles and 1.5 kg of gold were recovered from his house.

Mr. Datta said Mr. Reddy had invested Rs. 1.5 crore in a real estate firm, R.S. Developers, besides owning shares worth Rs. 15 lakh. Documents related to a finance company, Ashrita Finance, had been recovered. “We are investigating the possible connection between Mr. Reddy and the two firms,” Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde told presspersons. The police are investigating Mr. Reddy’s statement that he had borrowed Rs. 75 lakh from M.S. Shakuntala, wife of Basappa Reddy, former Director of Mines and Geology. Another team searched the ashram run by Mr. Reddy in the name of Ramana Maharshi Seva Trust at Thiruvagondanahalli in Anekal taluk of Bangalore Rural district.

The sleuths recovered documents related to four acres of agricultural land each held by him and his mother-in-law Chowdamma at Thiruvangondanahalli, two acres at Agrahara in Ms. Manjula’s name and three acres at Kambalipura held by Ms. Chowdamma apart from 12 acres of wetland in Mr. Reddy’s name in H.D. Kote in Mysore district.
