Barge runs aground at Karikaattukuppam

TAMBARAM: A barge, a flat-bottomed boat used for transporting consignment, ran aground at Karikaattukuppam near Muttukadu off East Coast Road on Saturday.
Fishermen and the police said that the barge was seen about 300 metres from the shoreline off Panaiyur on Friday evening and began drifting towards the shore. Early on Saturday morning, it ran aground at Karikaattukuppam. The barge had capsized and the words ‘FRANSMAR 8’ were written on it. It was about 75 feet long and 30 feet wide.
Aerial survey
Coast Guard officials said that they had made an aerial survey of the spot from a helicopter. Further investigations are on to ascertain which company it belonged to.
