VIZANAGARAM: Pollution, though in limited levels, in protected water supply schemes in Gantyada, Vizianagaram and a couple of other mandals was detected. The presence of coliform organism that causes diarrhoea/dysentery in the PWS schemes was a matter of concern. The Rural Water Supply Department had collected water samples and tested at its laboratory here found the pollution level in S.Kota, Vepada , Gantyada and in Vizianagaram mandals, particularly at Dwarapudi, Duppada, Sarika, Chellur and Kondakarakam villages was not within the limits. The coliform organism, according to WHO guidelines issued for the bacteriological quality, must be zero in PWS schemes. Executive Engineer (RWS) G.V.V.S.Prasad told The Hindu on Saturday that panchayat secretaries/ sarpanches were instructed to flush the overhead storage tanks and chlorinate them. As collecting water samples from every source and testing them was a difficult task the department had begun imparting training to five persons in each panchayat in water testing and they were being supplied. After imparting the training to five literate persons in 150 panchayats so far the department had supplied the kits each costing Rs. 2,500 to about 100 panchayats in the district. The others would be trained and supplied kits by February next year, lab in-charge P.S.N. Murty, who was present, said.
