For his lifetime contribution to cause of justice

New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil on Saturday presented the International Council of Jurists Award, 2007, to the Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, for his lifetime contribution to the cause of justice. As a judge, administrator, trainer and guide, he made exemplary and far-reaching contributions to the theory and practice of law for advancement of justice, the citation said.

International Bar Association president Fernando Pombo received the ICJ Award from Ms. Patil for his ‘selfless dedication to affairs of the legal fraternity throughout the world.’

The president of the International Court of Justice, Rosalyn Higgins, and Union Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj were not present to receive their awards.

The awards were presented at the International Conference of Jurists on Rule of Law organised by the International Council of Jurists and the All India Bar Association.

The President also presented the ‘Law Day awards, 2007’ to: the former Chief Justice of India, A.S. Anand, for his ‘outstanding contribution to fair and efficient administration of justice during his distinguished judicial tenure’; Bar Council of India chairman Gopakumaran Nair for his ‘unique contribution to legal education and leadership in the legal profession in India’; Additional Solicitor General, P.P. Malhotra for his ‘efforts in advancement of the science of jurisprudence; Advocate General of Punjab H.S. Mattewal for his ‘erudition and experience in constitutional law’; ICJ organising secretary S. Prabhakaran for his ‘outstanding contribution to the study and practice of criminal law and as fearless advocate of prisoners’ human rights and the cause of lawyers and legal profession’; Diljeet Titus for corporate law; Lalit Bhasin for his contribution to development of the Bar; Yatin Oza for civil law (in absentia) and Vice Chancellor of Bharati Vidyapeeth University Shivaji Rao Kadam for ‘maintaining highest standards in legal education.’
