Belgaum
Making a point: Writer and former Vice-Chancellor M.M. Kalburgi speaking at a seminar in Belgaum on Sunday. Belgaum: Writer and former Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University M.M. Kalburgi has said the State was yet to get a “nada geete” in true sense. Inaugurating a seminar organised as part of the four-day drama festival “Chouranga” here on Sunday, he said that though one of the best poems of Kuvempu had been chosen as “nada geete”, there was no poem worthy enough to be described as “nada geete”. “It is very difficult to find a nada geete which symbolises or depicts the culture of the land in a comprehensive and convincing way,” Mr. Kalburgi said. The seminar was jointly organised by the Karnataka Rangabhumi Sahakari Sangha, Rangabharathi, Huvina Hadagali; and Rangasampada in association with the Directorate of Department of Kannada and Culture. The festival will feature four dramas translated and authored by D.S. Chougale of Belgaum. On the literary scene in Belgaum, Mr. Kalburgi said unlike in the case of Dharwad, which witnessed a strong literary movement, there was no such movement worthy enough to be taken note of in Belgaum. Kannada literature did not grow to its required level here, he said. He said Mr. Chougale could concentrate more on translation works. AdviceMr. Kalburgi said that writers should be wary of quoting legendary and historical personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar as a false quote attributed to them could create confusion and send wrong signals in society. Writer and painter Chandrakant Kusnoor, who presided over the inaugural function, described Mr. Kalburgi’s remarks on “nada geete” as “daring and true”. He said that there was a phenomenal gap between demand and supply in the field of literature.
