All the arrested are native of Nanded, Maharashtra. They have been remanded in judicial custody. The arrested had come to Bidar to participate in Nanak Jayanti celebrations, the police said. A group of youths riding motorcycles were proceeding towards the gurudwara. One of the motorcycles hit Praful Kumar Pande, son of the former MLA Rameshkumar Pande. Mr. Pande was taking part in a marriage function, the police said. Mr. Praful Pande asked the youths to drive carefully and this triggered a heated exchange of words. The youths assaulted Mr. Pande with a “kirpan,” injuring him in his right hand. Later, the youths picked up an argument with constables at a temporary check-post on the “jhira” premises. Maruti and Nayeem, attached to the New Town police station, were injured. They also damaged a wireless set and a motorcycle of the Police Department. The police said that a group of youths had also indulged in some trouble in Mohan market area on Saturday night. Superintendent of Police Subramanyeshwara Rao said that trouble was created by youths from outside the State, particularly from Nanded in Maharashtra. The situation was under control and there was no need to deploy additional security forces, he said. Mr. Rao said that the police did not anticipate further trouble.
Balbir Singh, president of Nanak Jhira, Bidar, termed the incident as “unfortunate.”
