AUSPICIOUS BEGINNING: Union Minister for Surface Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa inaugurating ‘Bharath Nirman’ campaign in Bhadravati on Sunday.

BHADRAVATI: Union Minister for Surface Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa has urged State governments to make use of resources offered by the Union Government to ensure effective implementation of development works and welfare measures.

He was speaking after inaugurating “Bharath Nirman”, a five-day public information campaign launched by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in association with the district administration and the Shimoga Zilla Panchayat to highlight the progress achieved under various Central projects.

Mr. Muniyappa said that all the development programmes launched by the Congress-led UPA Government, which were underway, would be completed by March 2009.

He said that the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and improvement of road and communication infrastructure were among the Central schemes being implemented on a priority basis as they aimed at improving the living conditions of people. He said with the inclusion of six more districts, including Shimoga this year, NREGS was being implemented in 11 districts in the State. The remaining districts in the State would be covered by April 2008, he added. Mr. Muniyappa said that the Centre had allotted Rs. 197 crore for implementation of NREGS in Shimoga district, where 12 lakh families had been identified and 1.13 lakh beneficiaries issued cards under the scheme.

He said that Rs. 4 crore had already been sanctioned to the Shimoga Urban Development Authority for a ring road in Shimoga city.

B.K. Sangamesh, MLA, appealed to Mr. Muniyappa to accord priority to repair work of roads between Birur and Bhadravati and Shimoga and Bhadravati. .Director of the Press Information Bureau M. Nagendraswamy said that the purpose of holding the information campaign was to enlighten the public ont the progress achieved under various Centrally-sponsored programmes.

President of the zilla panchayat Chandrakumar, vice-president Jyothi S. Kumar, president of Bhadravati taluk panchayat Jayamma, Deputy Commissioner T.K. Anilkumar and Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat P. Bore Gowda were present.
