Na. D’Souza recalls Jnanpith award winners’ contribution

Special Correspondent

SHOWERING PRAISES: Writer Na. D’Souza speaking at the inauguration of a study camp on story, poetry and music of Kannada writers

SAGAR: Writer Na. D’Souza said here on Sunday that the seven Jnanpith award winning Kannada writers had made a significant contribution to enrich Kannada literature.

He was speaking after inaugurating the study camp on story, poetry and music of the award winning Kannada writers Kuvempu, Da. Ra. Bendre, Masti Venkatesh Iyengar, K. Shivaram Karanth, V.K. Gokak, Girish Karnad and U.R. Ananthmaurthy. The camp was jointly organised by the Malenadu Janapada Kala Tanda and Bhoomika Yuvati Mandali. Seven Kannada writers winning the award spoke of the potential and richness of the language, he said and added that the Jnanpith awardees had made a lasting contribution to Kannada through their works.

Referring to the need for giving the pride of place for Kannada at all levels, Mr. D’Souza said that the love for Kannada should not be made known by Kannadigas only on Kannada Rajyotsava day.

By conducting such literary study camps Kannada could be made more acceptable and applicable in day-to-day affairs, he said. Member of the town municipal council and the district unit president of Kannada Sene Basheer did not approve of acts such as smearing of signboards in other languages with tar, as it only showed linguistic fanaticism. “We should try to attract the non Kannadigas towards Kannada through love and affection,” he said.

President of the mandali Aparna Rajesh presided over the function.

Singer and winner of Shishunala Sherief Award Garthikere Raghanna and S.S Ramesh were present.

Journalists Deepak Sagar, Subhash Hegde, Yogeesh G. Bhat and Nagesh Rao were resource persons.
