COLOMBO: Two days ahead of the so-called “Hero’s Day” speech of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabakaran, the Air Force on Sunday claimed to have destroyed a “strategic” communication centre in Kilinochchi district. The Defence Ministry claimed that the LTTE had been coordinating its “international terrorist activities” from the place. However, the LTTE disputed the claim and alleged that the Air Force bombed a civilian settlement in Tharmapuram killing three civilians and injuring seven others. The Ministry said it was known to be a “highly secured palace where LTTE leaders frequently visit; and is equipped with sophisticated satellite communication devices. The target was identified following thorough air surveillance and on reliable ground information. The fighter pilots have confirmed the target was effectively achieved.” Quoting unnamed defence observers, the Ministry said the strike would have a devastating impact on the LTTE’s intelligence mechanism since its whereabouts were kept a top secret among LTTE heads. “The deterioration of the terror outfit’s secret service has been quite evident when looking at the value of air targets achieved by the air force during recent past.”
