HASSAN: A complete knee replacement operation was performed for the first time in Hassan by orthopaedic surgeon Basheer at a local nursing home on Friday. The patient will be able to walk slowly from Monday.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Sunday, Dr. Basheer said that the surgery had been done free of cost on Gowramma (75) who was suffering from osteo-arthritis for the past two-and-a-half years. She is from Mosale Hosalli village. She needed total knee replacement like former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Kannada actor Raj Kumar. The estimated cost of surgery was Rs. two lakh. Dr. Basheer said he had consulted Dayanand, head of the orthopaedic department at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, for guidance. A team of surgeons comprising Lakshmeesh, Kiran and Balakrishna (anaesthetist) had assisted Dr. Basheer in the operation.

He said knee replacement surgery could be performed at a cost of Rs. 50,000.
