Student’s tribute: Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane, Director of the Kidwai Institute of Oncology and alumni of the Bellary Medical College felicitating Dr. M.R. Budihal in Bellary on Sunday. BELLARY: The alumni of the then Bellary Medical college, snow rechristened as the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciencs (VIMS), recalled their time spent as students here around two decades ago. Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane, Director of the Kidwai Institute of Oncology, Dr. Dixit, Chief of the cardio-thoracic unit at KLE Hospital, Belgaum, Dr. Seshasai, Inspector in the Medical Council of India (MCI), Dr. Boraiah and Dr. Tejasvini were among over 40 alumni present at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Surgeons’ Association of the Bellary Medical College held here on Sunday. The alumni were happy that they could visit their alma mater after a long while and expressed satisfaction over the fact that the institution was still well reputed. They praised two of their teachers G. Pompanagowd and M.R. Budhihal and expressed gratitude to them for their commitment to teaching. Mr. Pompanagowd and Mr. Budihal had taught 106 of the total 190 postgraduates students, who had passed out from the Department of Surgery since 1982. Prior to the setting up of the college, the building was known as Allipur jail, where freedom fighters were lodged. Teachers Pompanagowd, Budihal, Chennagiri and Saiprasad were felicitated on the occasion. Dr. Ramanna of the Kidwai Institute of Oncology delivered a lecture on “role of surgery in Carcinoma of pancreas” organised by the association.
