HASSAN: Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph has said here on Sunday that upholding the rule of law is the duty of every citizen in the country and described the Indian Constitution as a role model in the world owing to its strong foundation. Earlier, he laid the foundation stone for the court complex in Sakleshpur in the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard here. He also inaugurated the Senior Division Court in Sakleshpur. He hoped the new court would serve as a compensation centre to the people.

Mr. Cyriac Joseph said that through an amendment the Government had raised the jurisdiction of the junior division courts from the present Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 5 lakh. Earlier, in order to claim compensation involving an amount of more than Rs. 50,000, the people had to go to higher courts. With the lower courts now being permitted to try cases involving amounts up to Rs. 5 lakh, it had come as a relief to the people. Similarly the limit of the district courts had also been raised, he said. Now, district courts can hear cases that were formerly tried by the High Court, while cases heard by the district court will now be heard by junior courts. He advised advocates to cooperate with judicial officers and not blame the presiding officer on losing cases.

The former Minister H.D. Revanna, who was the chief guest on the occasion said the district court complex in Hassan would come up at a cost of Rs. 21 crore and that it would be built on the model of the Supreme Court.

For development of other courts, Rs. 30 crore was being released.
