BHUBANESWAR: Agricultural experts on Sunday observed that though climate of certain regions in Orissa was suitable for spice crop production, absence of market link as well as storage facilities curtailed the prospects. Speaking at national symposium on medicinal, spices and aromatic crops here on Sunday, Vice Chancellor of Orissa University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT) D. P. Ray laid emphasis on value addition of certain spice crops such as turmeric, ginger, chilli, garlic and coriander. “We should actively consider introducing public-private partnership concept in production of spice crops,” Mr. Ray said. Orissa, one of the major spice producing states of India, is credited for the second position next to Andhra Pradesh in turmeric production. Besides, ginger, chilli, onion, garlic, coriander, fenugreek, fennel, back pepper are produced in different parts of the State. There was also a great scope of organic farming in both spice and aromatic crops as these were mostly grown in tribal dominated districts where chemical fertilizer consumption was relatively low, he said. Earlier inaugurating the event, Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare said scientists should develop very competitive base in all respect right from pre to post harvesting activities to ensure country’s position global spice market. The symposium was organised by OUAT in collaboration with Indian Society for Spices, Calicut.
