No more Nandigrams in future: Buddhadeb

Siliguri: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday said the CPI(M) would guard against the creation of a Nandigram-like situation anywhere in the State.

He said peace had been restored in Nandigram and the situation was fast returning to normal.

Addressing an open session of the Darjeeling district conference of the CPI-M here, Mr. Bhattacharjee said his party “would guard against the creation of a similar situation [Nandigram-like] anywhere in the future in the State.”

The proposed chemical hub had already been shifted to Nayachar from Nandigram and the work would start shortly, he said.

Mr. Bhattacharjee said that the “right-thinking” people of Nandigram were now regretting the government’s decision to shift the proposed chemical hub as it could bring about perceptible socio-economic change in the area.

Without naming the Trinamool Congress and its chief Mamata Banerjee, Mr. Bhattacharjee said a “one-person ruled party” was trying to mislead a section of the people who were opposing the State government’s development policy.

Referring to the violence in Darjeeling, he said the need of the hour was to restore peace and normalcy.

Criticising the parties which opposed the GNLF and demanded a separate Gorkhaland, Mr. Bhatacharjee said recognition of the Darjeeling Hill Council under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution was the only solution for the hills. — PTI
