Forum for road safety launched

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Choolaimedu Exnora Road Safety and Patrolling Forum, an initiative of the Choolaimedu Exnora Innovators’ Club, was launched at a function here on Sunday.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Planning) M. Subramanian said that the police are examining the possibility of diverting traffic through Vadagaram in a bid to ease the congestion on Choolaimedu High Road and Nelson Manickam Road. He hoped that the traffic flow in the area would improve when the North Usman Road-Mahalingapuram road over bridge becomes operational.

Club secretary S. Kasturi Rangan said that wherever police were people-friendly, the people supported their initiatives. About 30 persons from their locality have given their consent to join as volunteers to help the police improve traffic management and patrolling. Such public participation is expected to grow further, he added.

With growing vehicular population, road-users should follow the safety aspects strictly, said Suresh Selvin, an officer with the Traffic Warden wing. He also pointed out the merits of wearing helmets.

At an interaction with the police officers, the Club members expressed concern at the steady rise in encroachment by commercial vehicle operators. They also wanted the authorities to accord permit to share autorickshaws as it would help the commuters to reach different destinations with ease, particularly those from West Choolaimedu. Club president A. Pannerselvam and vice-president Mani Lakshmanan spoke.
