Facing the consequences: Tirupur Municipal authorities disconnecting water supply to a house at Jeeva Colony, Angeripalayam Road, on Friday following the non-payment of taxes to the local body for years.—
TIRUPUR: Worried over uncollected taxes to the tune of Rs.20 crore, the Tirupur Municipality on Friday began disconnecting water supply lines.
The authorities disconnected water supply pipes to 10 houses on College Road Angeripalayam, Jeeva Colony and various other areas.
An official involving in the action noted that those property owners had not paid taxes for years despite repeated pleas.
Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan said that poor tax collection had impacted in executing developmental works in town. In property tax, the municipality could collect so far Rs.4.24 crore against Rs.18.48 crore. The local body was able to collect Rs.34 lakh towards professional tax against the demand of Rs.1.71 crore.
Regarding the collection of water charges, the local body has to collect Rs.3.32 crore as it could collect only Rs.1.09 crore so far.
“The town, which will become a Corporation from January 1, needs fillip in infrastructure. Many development works have not been progressing due to shortage of funds,” he noted.
He also appealed to the residents to pay tax arrears immediately to avoid coercive actions.
