NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil on Sunday said there was a need to raise social awareness among women and provide public education to ensure that they got justice. She was delivering the inaugural address at a conference on “Access to Justice for Women.” Ms. Patil said it must not be forgotten that during the Independence struggle, women participated as equal partners under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership. “Today, we need to follow the example of the Mahatma to mobilise the entire nation on issues related to the development of women.” While appreciating the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the fight against various social evils and practices, she said they should be further strengthened. The spirit of service was important for mass awakening, she pointed out. “Colleges and schools should impart education in such a way that it inspires the younger generation so that the energy of the youth can be properly mobilised.”
