TIRUCHI: Ten village libraries will be started during the current financial year with a view to promoting the movement in the district, the District Library Officer A. P. Sivakumar said.

Speaking at a function to mark the valediction of the National Library Week here on Saturday, he said that the decision would facilitate the villagers to develop their intellectual skills by making most of the libraries.

The libraries would be opened in Oorakarai in Thathaiengarpettai; Punjai Sankenthi; Vaaladi; Mutharasanallur; Thuvakudi; Puthanampatti; Edhumalai; Palakurichi near Manapparai; Valanadu near Marunagapuri; and Kottathoor near Musiri.

“Thuvakudi, a municipal town on the outskirts of the city, benefits most since it is the first library to be opened there,” he said.

Mr. Sivakumar also said that the Department of Public Libraries had also permitted upgrading of eight part-time libraries into village libraries. The part-time libraries at Dhevanoor near Thathaiengarpettai; Dheeran Nagar (Thuraiyur); Alathudayanpatti; Paithamparai; Azhunthalaipoor (Pullampadi); E. Vellanur (Lalgudi); Elurpatti (Thottiyam) and Ondhandapatti (near Vaiyampatti) would be upgraded into village libraries.

He also said that a district-level library development conference would be held in a couple of months. He said that book-lovers and philanthropists had donated computers, furniture and other library-allied infrastructure worth Rs.12 lakh.

Browsing centre

The District Library Officer said that a browsing centre would be opened at the District Central Library in the city. Similar facility would be provided for the libraries in taluk headquarters in course of time.

Earlier, Transport Minister K. N. Nehru and the State Forests Minister N. Selvaraj distributed prizes to winners in various competitions held as part of the celebrations. Patrons and donors were also honoured on the occasion.

They said that the starting of libraries was one of the important components of the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam.

The Deputy Mayor M. Anbhazhagan suggested that a library be opened in each ward of the Corporation. The Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman said that one library would be started in each zone of the Corporation.

The District Collector Ashish Vachhani spoke on the importance of promoting the reading habit among students. The District panchayat president V. Sankeetha, MLAs Anbil Periyasamy and M. Rajasekaran also spoke.
