CPI plea to open medical college at Thirumayam

“Upgrade Ponnamaravathy into taluk headquarters”

PUDUKOTTAI: The Thirumayam taluk unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the State Government to open a government medical college at Thirumayam in Pudukottai district.

A resolution adopted at its conference held at Ponnamaravathy near here recently, said that Thirumayam was one of the most backward areas of the district and the location of the Government Medical College would contribute to its overall growth in socio-economic fronts.

The resolution also urged the Sivagangai MP and the Union Minister for Finance P. Chidambaram to impress upon Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of the need for starting the college.

The conference also wanted starting of a Government arts and science college in Ponnamaravathy to cater to the higher educational needs of a large number of youths of the villages belonging to backward and most backward communities.

Financial support to mill

Another resolution urged the State Government to provide special financial support to the Lakshmi Shanmugam spinning mill in Namanasamuthiram and expand its productivity in due course of time.

The conference also wanted Ponnamaravathy to be upgraded into a taluk headquarters and the status of the town panchayat to be elevated into a municipality.

Pointing out that the post of Assistant Executive Engineer had been lying vacant at five distribution offices of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in Ponnamaravathy, the conference adopted a resolution urging the Board to take immediate action to fill up the same for ensuring uninterrupted services to the consumers.

Resolutions pleading for re-laying of the road between Ponnamaravathy and Valampuri Vaduganathan Higher Secondary School and between Ponnamaravathy and Enathi village; construction of quarters for the police personnel attached to the Ponnamaravathy station and the Deputy Superintendent of Police were also passed.

The Alankudi MLA S. Rajasekaran inaugurated the conference. The taluk secretary A. L. Raju and the state committee member K. S. Azhagarsamy were among those who spoke.
