Integrated dairy farming good for farmers: VC

Special Correspondent

THANJAVUR: Integrated dairy farming can help in boosting the economy of farmers in Orathanadu area of Thanjavur district, said N. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar Maniammai University.

He was inaugurating a farmers’ club at Okkanadu Melaiyur near Orathanadu on Saturday at a function organised by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The club was linked to the State Bank of India.

Dr. Ramachandran said that members of the farmers club could divide themselves into groups and take up production of milk, marketing it, energy generation using cobar gas plants and for raising green fodder.

The area has hundreds of women self-help groups, organised by the Periyar Organisation for Women Education and Renaissance (POWER).

These members could also rear milch animals.

N.V. Baskaran, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, said that there are ninety farmers clubs in the district now, but only fifty are functioning properly.

He called for active involvement of farmers in running the clubs so that they could get bank loans for taking up various enterprises with subsidy. They could also avail the training facility provided by the NABARD.

While equipment like combined harvesters were used by farmers of Salem district in more numbers, there were only 15 such harvesters in Thanjavur district.

The mindset of the farmers should change and they should go for value addition to their agriculture produce and for setting up agro-based industrial units. He offered to help farmers if they come forward to put up a sago unit for using tapiaco cultivated by them.

Banks have earmarked credit disbursal to the tune of Rs.700 crore to Rs.800 crore in the agriculture sector for Thanjavur district this year.
