CHENNAI: Anna University-Chennai will play host to the first international forum of the Association of Indian Universities in which Vice-Chancellors of various Indian universities and educational administrators from abroad will deliberate on key issues in higher education.

The association’s 82nd annual meeting, which will be inaugurated by Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy on Monday, will see 150 Vice-Chancellors and foreign delegates from the U.S., Australia, Germany, France and the Netherlands discuss education in the era of globalisation and the need for connectivity among educational institutions.

The key recommendations of the three-day event, which includes a national seminar on the Knowledge Commission Report-2006, will be forwarded to the Central Government.

Report on Knowledge Commission

“We will function as a think tank by creating an environment for policy formulation. The highlight of the event will be the presentation of an analytical report on the Knowledge Commission Report,” Dayanand Dongaonkar, secretary general of the association, told reporters on Sunday.

The recommendations, he said, would help to find ways of improving the National Knowledge Index.

Other issues that will be discussed include the need for autonomy in higher education, faculty shortage, funding mechanism and volume of funding.

The meeting will also facilitate the formation of student research conventions in which research students will compete for national fellowships that will allow them to travel extensively around the world.

Representatives of the Department of Science and Technology, the Atomic Energy Commission and the Medical Council of India will also attend the deliberations.

The seminar on the knowledge commission, set for Wednesday, will be inaugurated by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and will have a special address by the former President, A.P. J Abdul Kalam. This is the eighth time that the event is being held in Tamil Nadu, and the second time in Anna University,

Y.C. Simhadri, president of the association, and D.Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University-Chennai, were also present.
