HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority has conducted 79,174 lok adalats from May 1996 to September this year settling 763,828 cases. The cases settled include those under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, compoundable/criminal/civil and motor accident claims tribunal cases. The authority conducted during the period 21,423 legal services camps and provided legal aid to 18,631 persons. The camps, particularly for the benefit of people living in slums, rural/tribal areas and nook and corners of the State, are organised as part of the legal awareness campaign. According to D. Subramanyam, member-secretary of the authority, the public can avail themselves of the legal services throughout the State for defending or conducting their cases before any court. The persons of eligible categories can apply to the concerned District Legal Services Authority in the premises of the district court. The legal services authorities extend legal advice or assistance for fighting their cases before courts in respect of all civil/service/matters and matrimonial/compoundable criminal cases.
