Protest against Elangovan effigy
Staff Reporter
E.V.K.S. Elangovan
ERODE: Traffic was disrupted for more than half an hour near the Erode central bus stand on Sunday following a demonstration by Congress volunteers when they found an effigy of Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan on a lamp-post carrying the slogan, “Elangovan is an anti-Tamilian.”
Within minutes, the volunteers removed the effigy. Erode Congress district president R.M. Palanisamy led the demonstration. The police said that the Minister had criticised the LTTE and its supporters at a meeting in Gobichettipalayam on Saturday.
After the meeting, Congress workers coming out of the venue noticed a board paying tribute to an LTTE leader. They damaged the board. The police suspect that in retaliation some pro-LTTE persons placed the effigy of Elangovan on the lamp-post in Erode. Mr. Palanisamy said pro-LTTE banners and posters had come up in many places in the district.
