Patronise khadi products, Chidambaram urges people

SIVAGANGA: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has called upon the people to patronise khadi products to sustain the livelihood of those depend on the village industry.

Inaugurating a refurbished centre of the Khadi and Village Industries Corporation at Kandanur near here on Sunday, he said khadi units were employing nearly 88 lakh people in the country, and the number might increase to 1.76 crore in the next five years. The Government had taken steps to improve the sale of khadi products.

Mahatma Gandhi advocated the promotion of khadi products to improve the lot of those making them.

Mr. Chidambaram said every citizen should spend at least five per cent of his total income on buying khadi products. The KVIC should introduce innovative designs and new models. More youths should be trained in the latest techniques.

Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment K.R. Periakaruppan said the khadi and village industries were playing an important role in improving the rural economy.

The State Government would further the growth of khadi units.

Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal, N. Sundaram and K.R. Ramasamy, MLAs, N. Markandan, president, Federation of Tamil Nadu Sarvodaya Sangams, and M. Pandian, chairman, district panchayat participated. Mr. Chidambaram declared open the new buildings constructed with the money allotted from the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Fund at Meenakshi Girls Higher Secondary School at Karaikudi.
