THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The new ostrich enclosure at the city zoo is slated to be inaugurated on November 27. With this the four ostriches at the city zoo will move into a more spacious enclosure that sports a bird-house. Once the ostriches are shifted to their new place of residence, zoo officials will move in the emu to the small enclosure where the ostriches are being housed now. “Only then can the work on the enclosures for the zebra and the giraffe be speeded up and completed,” zoo superintendent S. Abu said here on Sunday. The new ostrich enclosure has been provided with a special sand bed that is two feet deep to generate a pseudo-habitat feel for the ostriches. The zoo is also considering bringing over a female ostrich from the ‘farm’ at Chennai, he added. Work on the enclosures for the zebra and the giraffe that started many months ago are yet to be completed. This has put these animals to great difficulty. The giraffe in particular has very little by way of ‘leg room’ inside its present enclosure.
