Excise Department finds excess liquor at State Beverages Corporation depot

Staff Reporter

MD of corporation is awaiting inquiry report to initiate action

40 boxes of Indian Made Foreign Liquor

found in excess

Each box contains 48 tetra packs of liquor

BANGALORE: The State Excise Department has reportedly found 40 boxes of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) in excess of the book of accounts in the Whitefield Depot of State-owned Karnataka State Beverages Corporation, which is the sole distributor of IMFL in the State.

This came to light during an inspection which was carried out on Saturday and Sunday at the depot here, after the department got specific information about excess stock in the godown. All the 40 boxes contained tetra packs of Gilbis Whisky, manufactured by Karnataka Breweries and Distilleries, Nelamangala, according to a senior official of the department.

Each box contained 48 tetra packs of liquor. The corporation was made the sole distributor of IMFL in the State only to eliminate sale of “seconds” liquor by private distributors when S.M. Krishna was the chief minister.

However, one wonders how the excess stock entered the Corporation’s depot as the Excise Department keeps a strict watch on the IMFL trade.

The activities, right from the production to distribution, including loading of boxes into trucks and unloading at depots, are closely monitored.

Department personnel are posted at distilleries and all depots of the Corporation to make thorough checks.

Report

Corporation Managing Director N. Sivasailam told The Hindu that he is awaiting the report from the Excise Department.

“After receiving the report, I will initiate suitable action against those found responsible for the mess,” he said.
