Effluents still being discharged into drains

ERODE: Despite Madras High Court orders and the Erode district administration’s stringent instructions, huge quantities of effluents still being discharged by many textile and tanning industries in the district. The effluents discharged into the drains by the textile dyeing and printing factories functioning in Periyasemur, Manickkampalayam, Malligainagar and Vettukattuvalasu reaches the Pichaikkaranpallam odai, which merges with the Cauvery river.

The contaminated Cauvery water is then pumped for the supply to the residents at Periya Agraharam panchayat, Veerappanchatram, Periyasemur, Surampatty and Kasipalayam grade three municipalities.

Due to various encroachments the Pichaikkarampallam odai has already started narrowing, and along with it is the heavy flow of sewage and effluents.

The nearby open and bore wells were also polluted with this contaminated water said the residents.

Similarly the textile industries in Sastrinagarand its surrounding areas is also discharging untreated effluent into the drain, which merges with Kalingarayan canal, affecting the farming community. “The residents have complained to the Pollution Control Board but so far nothing was done. The effluents still gets mixed with the water in the Kalingarayan canal, consequently their crops are affected, many villagers have developed skin diseases and Cancer,” said the president of the Kalingarayan Farmer’s Association V.M. Velayutham.

‘Zero discharge’

The tanners and dyers said that they have installed Reverse Osmosis Plants and are treating the effluent and maintaining ‘zero discharge’. The officials said already they have sealed more than fifty textile industries who have violated the Pollution Control Board rules and they are also keeping strict vigil. They said that violators would be penalised.
