BHUBANESWAR: The five-day third annual Bhubaneswar International Film Festival to be hosted by the Film Society of Bhubaneswar will begin at Jayadev Bhawan here from Wednesday. The focus of the festival this year is on African and Asian cinema, informed the organisers. “Cinema from Africa and Asia are quite powerful in its expression but has been unable to reach a wider audience,” they said. The festival will begin with the special screening of ‘Kirikou and the Sorceress’ by Michel Ocelot followed by screening of Hollow city and Broken Wings. Also a new section named ‘Independent films’ for documentary film makers is introduced this year. The event will feature a special section – Great Masters – with four classics of World cinema ‘Ugetsu Monogatari (1953) by Kenji Mizoguchi, ‘Wild Strawberries’ (1957) by Ingmar Bergman; ‘Mouchette’ (1967) by Robert Bresson and ‘Titas Ekti Nadir Naam (1973) by Ritwik Ghatak. Eminent filmmaker Nirad Mahapatra will introduce the films. Acclaimed Oriya film ‘Sunya Swarupa’ made in 1996 by Himansu Khatua will have a special screening as the closing film of the festival.
