Woollens for tribal villages

Staff Reporter

15,000 blankets for villages with high incidence of fever

Songs on awareness about sanitation, cleanliness

Temperatures steadily plunging since last 10 days

Reaching out: Tribals of Narnoor mandal’s Umri village being treated at a special medical camp.

ADILABAD: Woollen blankets will be distributed in the next few days among tribals in the five agency mandals in Adilabad district that are worst affected by fevers.

Cold wave

Warm clothing has become necessary considering the unusually low temperatures in the hilly areas that are compounding the problems plaguing the tribal villages.

Since the last 10 days temperatures have been steadily plunging with the lowest being below 8 degree Celsius.

Collector Ahmad Nadeem said it has been planned to distribute about 15,000 blankets through the 150 self help groups from the villages where the incidence of fever and death has become a troubling phenomenon.

Children will not be a position to bear outside cold when they are already suffering from high body temperatures. The blankets will take care of the problem to some extent, he added.

Special teams

Meanwhile, special medical teams have been making rounds of the affected villages in Narnoor, Sirpur (U), Jainoor, Utnoor and Indervelli mandals. Besides administering medicines, blood smears are also being collected. Patients who exhibit acute anaemia are being treated for malnutrition with saline drip being the initial effort.

Fogging

At a few places fogging of entire villages was under progress that is expected to take control of the mosquito population.

Mosquito nets were also distributed in some worst affected villages.

The information education campaign (IEC) through cultural troupes was taken up in the remote areas.

Tribal troupes were pressed into service and songs on awareness about sanitation, cleanliness and ill effects of stagnant water and on proper nutrition were rendered in Gondi and Kolami dialects.

As good connectivity was required to all the villages so that the sick can be shifted whenever it was warranted, approach roads in bad condition were being repaired.

New bridges

In addition, proposals for construction of new bridges on existing roads that cross streams and rivers are also being readied.
