Children’s Day was celebrated in a grand manner by the Children of Blossom School at Thanjavur on November 14, the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru. A. Alagappan, Director of the school, presided over the celebrations. Mathimalar, a parent, was the guest of honour. Children performed various cultural programmes. One programme which stood out among the events was King Mahabali’s story which led to the celebration of Onam in Kerala. The children acted the roles of Mahabali and Lord Vishnu who took the Vamana avathar. Lord Krishna pricked the ego of Mahabali by putting his foot on his head after measuring earth and sky. Mahabali, who realised his mistake, made an appeal to the Lord to allow him to return to earth during Onam. State-level yoga competitionAt the State-level yoga competition held at the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Salem, students of Al’ Ameen Matriculation Higher Secondary School secured various prizes. S. Ishwarya (L.K.G.), V. Monica (L.K.G.), D. Sangari (U.K.G.) and V. Siva Sankari (I) won gold medals. M. Satham Hussain (III) won a silver medal. M. D. Mashood Hasan (I), M. D. Mehabub Alam (IV), S. Keerthivasan (IV), N. Santhosh (V), A. Mohamed Ibrahim (VI) and B. Guruchandran (VI) were bronze medal winners. A. Mohamed Ibrahim (class VI) was selected for the 32nd National Yoga Championship event. School Correspondent M. Kamaludeen and Principal S. Syed Abdul Subahan felicitated the winners and yoga teacher R. Rajalakshmi. Environmental Club meetingEnvironmental Club meeting was held in Crescent Higher Secondary School, Avaniapuram, near Aduthurai in Thanjavur district. Headmaster Sagul Hameed presided over the function. He stressed on the need for protection environment and the responsibility of student. Founder of Mahatma Gandhi Children Welfare Association, Aduthurai, G. Sambasivam spoke on the importance of conserving nature, tree planting, effect of global warming, pollution and its hazards. Saplings were distributed to the students. Environmental club coordinator R. Tamilarasan, N.S.S. Programme Officer S. Mohamed Iliyas and National Green Corps Coordinator A. Haja Mydeen spoke. Kids Show -2007 conductedKids Show – 2007 was held at the Aditya Birla Public School, Reddipalayam, Ariyalur, recently. Senior Vice-President, Grasim Industries Limited, R.S. Palod was the chief guest. General Manager, Grasim Industries Limited, J. Settu presided over the function. Aditya Birla Public School and Arasu Nagar Matriculation School shared the top spot. Principal of host school Geetha Govindan Menon was present. Numismatic exhibitionA numismatic exhibition was held at the Killukottai Government Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, to commemorate the United Nations Day. Rare coins on display attracted the attention of the onlookers. Headmaster B. Sukumar Devadoss’s personal collection was also part of the exhibition which was inaugurated by Headmistress of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Keeranur, Vanaja Salomi. Cultural programmesCultural programmes including play, dance and rendition of songs by a group of teachers on Pandit Nehru and his achievements were the highlight of Children’s Day celebrations held at Ponmari Matriculation School, Bommadimalai, Pudukottai, recently. Correspondent of the school, Chandra Raveendran, presided over the function and headmistress K. Vidya and coordinator T. Selvarani spoke. Quiz and science expo heldUnder the auspices of Lions Club of Mathur, a competition on quiz was held and science exhibition conducted at Lawrence Higher Secondary School in Mullipatti near here recently. Students from nine schools displayed the exhibits prepared by them. The overall shields for quiz competition and science exhibits went to the Government Special Higher Secondary School in Mathur and Alpha Group of School respectively. Mayor Sarubala R. Tondaiman, who gave away the shields and prizes to the winners, appreciated the efforts taken by the students in preparing various models using scientific principles. She also appealed to them to avoid the use of plastics, as part of their contribution to protecting the environment. Principal of Lawrence Higher Secondary School Bro. Benidict inaugurated the competition. President of Club M. Muniappan and its treasurer J. Dhanraj were among those who spoke. National Integration WeekCompetitions on essay-writing, elocution and painting formed the highlight of the National Integration Week celebrations at the Government Model Higher Secondary School in Pudukottai. Principal S. Rajasekar explained the importance of national integration. He underlined the role of students in creating a casteless society and strengthening communal harmony. He said that the ‘Minorities Welfare Day,’ ‘Weaker Section Day,’ “Linguistic Harmony Day,’ ‘Cultural Unity Day,’ “Women’s Day’ and ‘Conservation Day,’ were observed as part of the celebrations. Lectures were delivered to mark the significance of each day. Pudukottai village panchayat president Diraviya Rani and Mullur village panchayat president D. Lakshmi participated. Vice-Principal N. Muthubaskaran and Post-Graduate Teacher P. Muthukumaran delivered special lectures on the life of the late Indira Gandhi and her sacrifices in the cause of integrating the people of our country and developing our nation. Contributed by G.
