Government proposes to import cement: Minister

MONETARY RELIEF: Minister for Industries and Agriculture V. Vaithilingam presenting a cheque for crop damage to a farmer in Puducherry on Monday.

PUDUCHERRY: Minister for Industries and Agriculture V. Vaithilingam on Monday said the government proposed to import around 30,000 tonnes of cement to check price rise.

Speaking to newspersons here, the Minister said that by January, construction activity would begin in Puducherry and there would be good demand for cement, the government’s move would be to control the prices in the market.

The territorial administration had sought permission from the Central Government to import cement.

“After we get the permission we will go in for a global tender process,” he added. Mr. Vaithilingam said that ‘Uzhavar Sandhais’ would be opened in 2 more places, one in Ariyankuppam and Muthialpet. The one in Ariyankuppam will be opened by Pongal and the government is looking for land in Muthialpet.

‘Uzhavar Udhaviyagams’ would be opened in 5 more places including Vizhudiyur in Karaikal, Bahour, Mannadipet and Thirubuvanai in Puducherry. Proposals had been submitted for these, he added.

Mr. Vaithilingam inaugurated distribution of Rs 39.61 lakh as relief to farmers, whose crops were damaged in the whirlwind that hit Puducherry in the month of May 2007.

A total of 2069 farmers, who had cultivated banana, sugarcane, vegetables and casuarina crops, would be compensated. Banana cultivators would be paid a compensation of Rs 6000 per hectare and others Rs 4000 per hectare.
