PUDUCHERRY: Students of Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on Monday staged a demonstration opposing the implementation of compulsory one-year rural posting scheme for medical undergraduates. The students, wearing black badges and holding placards, expressed their solidarity with fellow medical students, who have been protesting against the proposal. Big burden In a press release here, the JIPMER Students Association said that a six-and-half-year undergraduate MBBS course would be too big a burden for the average medical student. They also said that posting a fresh medical graduate in a rural area for a period of four months would be too significant to leave an impact on the level of health care. Instead they suggested that the existing health worker system be strengthened. Upgrade infrastructureThe existing infrastructure of Primary Health Centres would have to be upgraded considerably before such rural posting can be implemented, they said. InadequateThe association also said that a payment of Rs 8,000 for fresh graduates would be grossly inadequate to support themselves.
