BHUBANESWAR: In one of the biggest gatherings of teachers in the recent past, over 20,000 siksha sahayaks on Monday announced an indefinite strike demanding regularisation of their jobs. The 500-metre road stretch from Bhubaneswar Railway Station to Lower PMG Square was jam packed with teachers who swarmed into the capital city from all 30 districts in large numbers. On November 13, in an attempt to please the thousands of agitating siksha sahayaks in the State, Orissa Government announced relaxation in the norms pertaining to their appointment as primary teachers. As per the announcement, siksha sahayaks, who completed five years in service, would be appointed as contractual teachers. They would get monthly remuneration of Rs. 3,600. These teachers would be appointed as regular teachers against the vacant posts with full salary. Existing rulesAs per the existing rules, the siksha sahayaks were getting Rs. 3,000 per month after four years of service and Rs. 3,500 after completing seven years in the post. Those appointed as siksha sahayaks afresh get a monthly remuneration of Rs. 1,500. At present, there are around 50,000 siksha sahayaks working in the primary schools across the State. These teachers have been agitating for a long time demanding they be given regular appointment as primary teachers.
