Man held for using stolen ATM card

CCTV at Punjab National Bank’s ATM centre helps police recover the money

Accused admitted seeing his friend’s PIN code and memorising it

Total of Rs.64,000 withdrawn from different ATMs across the city

Srinagar: A man on Monday was arrested for allegedly using a stolen ATM card and drawing money from his friend’s account, a Jammu and Kashmir Police spokesman said here.

Arrested within 4 days

Gurmeet Singh was arrested within four days of registration of a case on the complaint of sales development manager of a bank Satish Kumar, alleging that his Punjab National Bank ATM card has been stolen and the thief had taken out money from his account through several transactions made at different places in the city, a police spokesman said.

It was a blind case of cheating and theft. By using the latest technology, police solved the case as the CCTV installed at the Court Road branch of Punjab National Bank’s ATM here helped in the arrest and recovery of the stolen money from him, the spokesman said.

Gurmeet, a resident of Haft Chinar, initially denied his hand in the theft but broke down when systematically questioned after police got details of ATM transactions and scrutiny of the CCTV recordings which clearly showed him taking out money from the ATM.

The spokesman said Gurmeet admitted that he had seen his friend drawing money from ATM and had memorised his code.

Later, he stole the ATM card from his friend and took out a total of Rs.64,000 in transactions from different ATMs across the city, the spokesman said.
