KOLLAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government’s policy towards English education will harm the State. Inaugurating the 33rd State conference of the Kerala NGO Association here on Monday, he said that if English education was stopped in government schools, children of the common man would be denied global opportunities. It would place English education exclusively at the reach of the rich. Mr. Chandy alleged that the government’s approach had led to uncertainty with regard to the Vallarpadam project. This was in spite of the fact that the Centre had come forward to financially support the infrastructure part of the project which the State government had to meet. He alleged that anti-social elements were being protected by the Ministers themselves, as a result of which even the police found it extremely difficult to counter criminal activities. Mr. Chandy alleged that the LDF was trying to torpedo the one rank, one pension scheme. Also, though it was time, the government was not mentioning anything about the Ninth Pay Commission.G. Rajan, president of the association, who presided, said the government appeared to be formulating rules and laws only for financially strengthening the Communist Party of India (Marxist). All-India Congress Committee secretary Kodikunnil Suresh; the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee general secretaries M.I. Shanavas and M.K. Raghavan; UDF district convener Sooranad Rajashekaran; and the Congress leader Rajmohan Unnithan spoke. District Congress Committee president Kadavur Sivadasan welcomed the gathering.
