For payment of electricity bills, residents of Ramanathapuram have to go the TNEB offices situated on the Madurai-Rameswaram Highway, which is far off from the town. Pensioners, senior citizens and ladies find it difficult to visit the office for bill payments. I request the officials concerned to open collection office at Ramanathapuram. A collection centre could be opened inside the Ramanathapuram municipal office complex or a rented premises could be availed for running it. It will be equally easy for the officials to remit the collected the amount into bank which is also situated within the town. Asmabagh Anvardeen, Ramanathapuram. Train haltThe Madurai-bound Rameswaram train, which starts from Madurai at 6.15 p.m. reaches Ramanathapuram at 8.45 p.m. This train is being stopped at the second platform. This causes hardship to senior citizens and patients as they have to climb the overbridge and come down from it. This can be stopped at the first platform as there is no train to arrive or leave this station in the whole of night. Recently, my family and myself returned to Ramanathapuram by the above-said train. The overbridge plunged into darkness. All the passengers had a tough time in finding their way through. When enquired, a staff told us that it was due to power failure. Will the officials concerned do the needful? G. Nagasamy, Ramanathapuram. IIThe Southern Railway has been operating trains on board gauge line between Manamadurai and Rameswaram. But passenger amenities at the railway stations are deplorable. In Paramakudi Railway Station, there is no public toilet. Toilets are available only at the waiting hall. All the commuters may not utilise the waiting hall. Women passengers are facing hardship to attend their nature call. I request the railway authorities to construct a toilet at least for women passengers. V. Rajendran, Paramakudi. Maintenance of tanksIt was reported (The Hindu, November 17) that the Sivaganga Collector visited tanks in the district. Nowadays, one finds in these rain-fed tanks just hallows of water as the channels carrying rain-water have all been blocked or lost. If only these tanks had been maintained properly, there would have been no need now to go for bank loans to renovate them. The area where the weekly shandy is held is in a deplorable state. It is a miracle that vegetable vendors manage to do business under trying conditions. The roads are very bad, with heaps of stones and sand. Sivan Koil west street is the worst hit. G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga.
