Thiruvananthapuram: Around 53.77 per cent of the Group C and D employees of the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division exercised their secret vote on the first day of the three-day referendum that began on Monday for granting recognition of trade unions in Indian Railways. Of the 10,600 voters, 5,700 voted on Monday at 11 booths set up in the division. In the State capital, 1,700 of the total 2,300 votes were polled. Three booths were set up in the city. The Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) affiliated to the All India Railwaymen’s Federation, the Southern Railway Employees Sangh affiliated to the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen, the Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) affiliated to the CITU and some other unions are contesting in the referendum. Brisk polling was witnessed in the booths set up on the first floor of the Central Station building at Thampanoor. As per rules, the trade union getting 30 per cent of the votes or 35 per cent of the votes polled would be considered as ‘General Manager Recognised Trade Union’ of the respective railway zone. The counting is scheduled for December 3 at Chennai.
