File objection, says court HIGH COURT ROUND-UP

Against plea seeking removal of CPI Ministers

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Monday directed the State government to file objection, if any, to the quo warranto writ petition seeking to remove Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran and Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran allegedly on the ground of forcibly securing the release of two Thiruvananthapuram Corporation women councillors from police custody.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice Joseph issued the directive when the petition came up for heairng.

The petitioner alleged that the Ministers had violated the oath of office by forcibly securing the release of the two councillors who were taken into custody by the police for beating up a woman constable. The petition was filed by Paulachan Puthuppara.

Order to conduct polls

Justice Antony Dominic has directed that the colleges run by the NSS management under the Calicut University and the University of Kerala be allowed to conduct student union elections in accordance with the parliamentary form of elections.

The directive came on a writ petition filed by the Secretary of the NSS college central committee against the directive of the universities for conducting elections on the basis of the presidential system.

According to the petitioner, the management had six colleges under the Calicut University while nine colleges were affiliated to the University of Kerala.

Pointing out that the Supreme Court had warned against politicising campuses, the court said that the incidents of violence had become the order of day in the State.

The politicians were seen to treat educational institutions as fertile ground for their activities.

Procurement date

Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan on Monday directed the KERAFED and the State government to file an affidavit stating the tentative date for starting the procurement of raw coconut.

Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan issued the directive when the palm oil import case came up for hearing on Monday.

Counsel representing coconut farmers’ organisations said that the procurement process might not take place unless the State government notified a date for starting the procurement of raw coconuts.
