Bangalore: The long wait by the Indian Navy’s to enhance its long range maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare capabilities could soon come to an end. The Ministry of Defence, which has shortlisted two competitors — Boeing Corporation and Airbus Industrie — for the eight, state-of-the-art, multi mission maritime aircraft that the Navy is planning to acquire, is to open the rival competitive bids on Wednesday. The opening of competitive bids is expected to be soon followed by negotiations and clarifications, with the winner being declared thereafter. The deal is expected to be worth in the range of around $3 billion. While Boeing is offering their multi mission maritime aircraft P-8 (International), Airbus has put forward their A319. Boeing’s P-8 Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft (MMA), which is a modified Boeing 737-800ERX is capable of broad-area, maritime and littoral operations. Sponsored in June 2004 by the U.S. Navy, whose P-8 version is christened the P-8 (Poseidon), it is expected to replace the U.S. Navy’s almost 200 P-3s.
