Condemnable

* * *

The crude retaliation by Guwahati residents against Adivasi protesters deserves condemnation. What was shocking was that the locals (as seen in the photograph published by The Hindu on November 25) were decently attired but behaved like Stone Age people. Young educated Adivasi students’ just demand to include the Santal Adivasis and the Tea Tribes in the list of Scheduled Tribes has not been given the priority it deserves by either the State government or the Centre.

The violence perpetrated against the Adivasi rallyists is a matter of serious concern. The government must initiate stringent action against those responsible. Media reports say about 3,000 to 4,000 protesters had gathered at the venue. The government should have taken steps for the smooth conduct of the rally.

In the last few years, local residents have become judges in various parts of the country. This tendency must be nipped in the bud.

Tiruchi
