Coimbatore: In the wake of the serial explosions in court complexes in Uttar Pradesh, the Coimbatore City Police have stepped up security measures besides intensifying the policing measures. The measures would be in force in view of November 29 that marked the death anniversary of traffic constable R. Selvaraj (murdered by fundamentalists on November 29, 1997) and the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary that falls on December 6. The City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan, in a release said that intelligence wings dealing with surveillance of fundamentalist outfits have been put on total alert. In the last two days, the police had conducted checks at 120 lodges/hotels and clubs. This was to prevent the infiltration of elements from other places for indulging in sabotage. A total of 182 suspicious looking persons who were not able to prove their identity had been rounded-up as part of the security measures. In addition, 83 cases had been registered against persons for indulging in undesirable activities. A team of Anti-Sabotage Teams of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad personnel conducted anti-sabotage checks in places of public congregation. On Monday, a team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Security), C. Samabsivam conducted checks at the Combined District Sessions Court Complex and at the parking lots in the Cinema Theatre complexes. Goondas ActThose attempting to brew trouble would be detained under the Goondas Act, Mr. Gandhirajan said. As many as 68 ex-convicts had been rounded-up. The police have also registered 341 cases for violation of road rules. As many as 24 jeeps, 31 motorcycles and ten cycles had been pressed into patrol duty. The police have also posted armed pickets in all the sensitive pockets and points closer to vital installations. The security measures on all arterial and feeder roads have been strengthened. As part of the drive against anti-social elements, the Inspector General of Police (West Zone), K. Rajendran, on Monday said that 78 persons have been detained under various provisions of law in order to ensure maintenance of public peace and tranquillity.
