Daughter returns home from school to find her mother dead

Asha was strangled with the lace of a sofa cover

House not ransacked; ear studs untouched

BANGALORE: A 38-year old mother of two was found murdered and robbed of her gold jewellery at her house on the crowded Seshadripuram Main Road on Monday.

The police gave the name of the victim as Asha, wife of Krishnamurthy, who runs an automobile spare parts shop in Hebbal. The murder that took place at the couple’s first floor house sent shockwaves in the locality, which is a bustling business centre in Seshadripuram.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) B.N.S. Reddy told The Hindu that the assailant had strangled Asha with the lace of a sofa cover and taken away a pair of gold bangles she was wearing as well as her mangalyasutra. The murder is suspected to have taken place between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., when Asha was alone at home.

Around 1.45 p.m., Krishnamurthy’s employee, Manoj, came to the house and as usual collected his employer’s lunch from Asha. He also chatted with her, Mr. Reddy said.

At 3.10 p.m., Asha’s daughter, Shreya (15), a class IX student at Sophia, came home. When she rang the bell, there was no response from her mother. Assuming she had gone out, Shreya went to her paternal grandmother’s house on the adjoining lane to get the spare key. Apparently, this was a routine with the family.

When Shreya returned and opened the door, she found her mother lying dead on the floor of the living room. On being informed, her grandmother and other relatives came there and called the police, Mr. Reddy said. Asha’s son Snehit (12) studies in Poornaprajna School, Sadashivanagar.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Gopal B. Hosur, after visiting the crime scene, said that the house was not ransacked and the killers had apparently left in a hurry. Asha’s gold ear studs were intact.

It is too early to say whether someone known to the family or an organised gang was involved in the crime, Mr. Hosur said.

The Seshadripuram police have registered a case of murder. Investigation is on.
