Ezhimala academy to begin training in 2009

Staff Reporter

Vice Admiral S.K. Damle

Kochi: Training for Naval cadets will begin at the Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kannur, from July 2009, seven months after commissioning the academy, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command Vice Admiral S.K. Damle has said.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday in connection with the Navy Week celebrations, he said that the Naval Academy would be a world-class one. “Local people stand to benefit much since we have started recruiting people to different posts.” Aimed at making the graduates techno-savvy, the focus would be on technical-oriented training. The graduates would get a B.Tech degree and they could be posted in the engineering and executive wings. The degree has been recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). A dialogue is on with the Jawaharlal Nehru University for affiliation, he said.

Out in the Academy, Navy personnel will be trained to make them eligible for employment in the civilian sector too. Many foreign navies are keen on training their cadets here. As of now, 150 officers and 82 sailors from 20 countries are being trained in Indian Naval establishments.

Asked about many youth preferring to join high-paying jobs in the civilian sector than the country’s defence forces, Vice Admiral Damle said he was hopeful about the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission being implemented, so that better talent could be attracted to the Services. “As of now, we have enough people volunteering to join the Navy. Slowly, people have begun to realise the quality of life in the Services.” December 4 is observed as Navy Day, to commemorate the 1971 attack on Karachi harbour by Indian Navy’s missile boats, which paved the way for Pakistan surrendering to Indian forces. The Naval Base will be open to the public from November 30 to December 2. Asked about the progress of work on what would be India’s first indigenously-built aircraft carrier that is set to roll out by 2012 from the Cochin Shipyard, Vice Admiral Damle said it was progressing.
