The passport authorities at Tiruchi have introduced the on line filing of application followed up by submission of hard copy in person. The long line for submission together with the over crowding inside the passport office for verification and payment needs the attention of authorities. Recently, I witnessed a near stampede like situation in front of verification counter A, B & C. I request the authorities to seek police assistance to regulate the crowd and streamline the process of submitting the application. D.V. Ayyer Anna Nagar Phase III Modern abattoirThere is no denying the fact that a modern abattoir is one of the long felt needs of Tiruchi. But the selection of the G-Corner site, opposite to Ranjithapuram in the city for the purpose by the corporation is most unsuitable for more than one valid reason. Tiruchi Airport is not too far away from this site. The planes flying at low altitudes near the airport during landing and taking off will face the risk of accidents by bird-hits. The meat from the abattoir intended for public consumption is exposed to the risk of contamination from the unhygienic sewer handled in the main sewer pumping station located in close proximity to the proposed abattoir. D. Jeyaraj Tiruchi IIIt seems finally that corporation has zeroed in on G-Corner ground for setting up an abattoir despite apprehension of the residents there. The effluent treatment plant should have a most modern Anaerolic digesting treatment of effluents besides other clarification and purification step by step treatments. By any reasonable calculation the perfect ETP system of that capacity to treat abattoir effluent should cost upwards Rs.3 crore and annual running cost of Rs.30 lakh. Let the residents of G-Corner be vigilant and elicit all particulars from Tiruchi Municipal Corporation and TNPCB lest they will be taken for a ride to be footed later. T.M. Renganathan Srirangam Traffic signalsSignals, where free left is prohibited must have a clear indication board for the convenience of the vehicle users. Nowadays, advertisement boards are provided beneath the signals or above them. To the extent possible, the colour coding of the advertisements boards kept in signals should not be similar to that of the signal lights. Viewing the signals in some areas are difficult due to it positioning. Overhead route indication boards may be provided and the signals may be suspended from the overhead board. M. Gopalakrishnan Thillai Nagar Timely actDespite the fact that the pilot of SPICE JET had not maintained the minimum distance at the Coimbatore airport, by overshooting, praise goes to the pilot, who applied the sudden brakes and saved many lives including her own. The pilot had been sharp enough. Any negligence would have resulted in a sad end of not saving the passengers and crew. S. A. Govindarajan
K. K. Nagar EB bill paymentThe residents of Ammamandapam, Seshadripuram and Renganagar area of Srirangam have to remit their E.B. bill at the E.B. office at Melur Road. Mostly senior citizens and housewives have to walk more than 1½ kms to remit the dues. Carrying more cash with them to the E.B. office situated in an unsafe locality poses safety problems. There is one E.B. branch office at Rajaji Street of Renganagar and if dues are accepted at this office their sufferings will be mitigated. The only thing the E.B. authorities have to do is to install a computer system at the E.B. branch office at Renganagar. Will they come forward? A. Sampath Srirangam Green coverThe photograph under the caption, “Awareness needed, The Hindu (November 22)” showing a big tree being razed down in the city made sad reading. It is a matter of concern that the green cover in the city is rapidly dwindling. The reasons for the same are not far to seek as several trees on the roadside are being cut down to facilitate infrastructural works such as the underground drainage scheme related works and road expansion. The authorities in charge should spare a thought for the natural resources like trees which are of considerable help in maintaining the eco system. J. Anantha Padmanabhan Srirangam Parking of vehicles
Between Government Polytechnic and TREC-STEP there is a temple situated on the NH 67. Devotees, motorists and industrial lorries park their vehicles very near the steps of the temple. It is very difficult for the public to cross that point. I request the concerned authorities and highway patrol police to book cases against the wrong parking of vehicles. N. Alagappan Tiruverumbur Damaged bridge
It is ridiculous that the government is continuously negligent to the damaged new bridge across the Amaravathi river. It was the first bridge to be constructed on Build-Operate-Transfer basis in Tamil Nadu. A technical probe was recommended which did everything except taking steps for repairing. Cases were filed against politicians of opposite parties blaming each other. All vehicles are forced to use only one half of the bridge. The contractor should be punished for this and he should be convicted making him bear the sole responsibility of repairing it at the earliest. P. Ramesh Balajee Tiruchi Traffic regulation One Traffic Constable has to be permanently posted in the mid-way of Pattabiram Road, through which the moffusil buses are passing to reach central bus stand. As this may lead to accidents of two wheelers, four wheelers and pedestrians posting of a constable is a must and it has to be done with immediate effect. Otherwise the buses have to be diverted through some other way. G. Srikanth T. V. Koil Civic amenities
Crawford colony is one of the oldest residential areas of Tiruchi Corporation. In spite of this, in many aspects it is lacking in civic amenities. The roads and streets have left a lot to be desired. Apart from this there are lot of open gutters and most of them are below the road level without any proper embankment and they have become the breeding centre of mosquitoes. Besides, the colony is flooded with stray dogs and monkeys. H. Ghouse Baig Crawford Colony
