CHENNAI: The Video Piracy Cell police will step up measures to track down those indulging in copying new Tamil films and focus on expanding its database systematically, according to the Inspector-General of Police, CB-CID (SIT), Karan Singha. Speaking to reporters here on Monday, he said that based on intelligence reports, in raids conducted across the State so far this year, the police seized pirated CDs/MP3 and other accessories valued at Rs.17.30 crore and arrested 1,676 persons. The police had detained 10 persons under the Goondas Act. Mr. Singha said that by roping in other units of the police department, the Video Piracy Cell police would intensify its search operations. In October this year alone, he said that as many as 166 cases were registered and properties valued at Rs.3.95 crore seized as against the seizure worth Rs.1.14 crore in October, 2006. Deputy Inspector General of Police (CB-CID SIT) R. Arumugam said that apart from punishing offenders under the Copyrights Act, habitual offenders would be detained under the Goondas Act. He
