There is no democracy in JD(S): Prakash

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: The former Minister and Janata Dal (S) leader M.P. Prakash has said he will hold a convention of like-minded leaders and activists of the party before the end of December, where he would announce his next political step.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, the former Home Minister said a decision on where to conduct the convention would be taken during a meeting of party leaders he had called on November 28.

Mr. Prakash said around 25 Janata Dal (S) MLAs were likely to participate in the meeting.

The convention would be held either in Hubli or Davangere, he said.

However, he clarified that the meet was not a “show of strength.”

To a query, Mr. Prakash said he had differences with regard to decisions taken by the party supremo H.D. Deve Gowda. “There are some people in the party who share my opinion. However, that doesn’t mean that I should go on criticising Mr. Deve Gowda,” he said.

On his next political move, Mr. Prakash said he didn’t want to be in a party where there was no “internal democracy.”

To another query, Mr. Prakash said after the Janata Dal came into existence it had split 14 times. The unilateral decisions of the party’s senior leaders were the reasons for the splits, he observed.

On whether he would still support the idea of having a truck with the Congress, Mr. Prakash said he would it and there were leaders in the party who backed it too.

Mr. Prakash categorically stated that what had been convened on November 29 by the party president was not an executive committee meeting, but a convention of Janata Dal (S) leaders and members and that’s why he had decided not to attend it.

Sindhia to keep off

Our Mangalore Staff Correspondent reports:

The former Minister P.G.R. Sindhia has said he will not participate in the meeting convened by Mr. Prakash. Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Sindhia welcomed the statements of Mr. Prakash for “restoration of internal democracy” in the Janata Dal (S) and hoped it would pave the way for the end of one man’s hold on it.
