TIRUCHI: The secret ballot election in Southern Railway to enable railway staff select a union of their choice commenced on Monday with several employees serving in Tiruchi Railway Division and those working in the Goldenrock Railway Workshop here exercising their franchise. The three-day election, which concludes on November 28, is being held simultaneously in all the 16 railway zones across the country.
Railway sources said 20 booths had been set up in Tiruchi Division and six in Goldenrock Railway Workshop here to enable railway employees cast their vote to select a union of their choice for the purpose of granting recognition to them.
While the total electorate in Tiruchi Division is over 11,000, it is over 6,000 in the case of Goldenrock Railway Workshop.
The sources said over 5,800 votes were polled in the Division on the first day and over 3,600 votes were polled in the Workshop.
This is the first time in the history of Indian Railways that a secret ballot election is being conducted.
