Call for practicing democracy sagaciously even in difficulty

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The former Chief Justice of India, M.N. Venkatachalaiah, has called for responsible practice of democratic values even in difficult conditions.

Delivering the Law Day address here on Monday Mr. Venkatachalaiah said that the “rule of law and a fiercely independent judiciary and press can protect the institutions of democracy.”

He said every human weakness was exaggerated by power. Every power had an inherent tendency to run to excess. The message of rule was “let no man be trusted with power but tie him down with the chains of the Constitution,” he added

He said, “The rule of law was the operating instrument of justice in a civilised society.”

“Our Constitution rests on federalism, democracy, constitutionalism, rule of law and respect for minority rights. These defining principles function in symbiosis,” he added.

Earlier, advocates, legal officers and others marched from the High Court premises to the City Civil Courts where the Law Day function was held.
