Water projects make brisk progress

Officials confident of meeting the deadline in executing the projects’ works

ANANTAPUR: Several drinking water projects taken up in the district are making headway and the engineers concerned, who are executing the project works, are confident that the they would meet the deadlines of completion.

Once completed, the projects in progress taken up with an estimated cost of Rs. 1,120 crore, and the ones already functioning are likely to provide safe drinking water to about 95 per cent of the district’s population.

Minister for Agriculture N. Raghuveera Reddy, engineer-in-chief of Rural Water Supply Rajeswara Rao and others inspected the progress of works on the N. Sreerama Reddy drinking water project last week. Work on the water treatment plant being constructed on the bed of Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir, from where the water is lifted, was in progress at brisk pace. The treatment plant has been designed to treat 63 million litres per day and the project is envisaged to supply safe drinking water in the southern parts of the district. In all, 874 villages in Hindupur, Madakasira, Rayadurg and Kalyanadurg constituencies would get water from the project costing Rs. 450 cr. Besides, Hindupur town and industrial areas would also be given water.

Of the 176 kms length of pipeline required for the project, digging was completed for 56 kms and pipes were laid in 22 kms length, the engineers stated.

The work is expected to speed up on the completion of kharif agriculture season, as most of the fields through which the pipeline passes have standing crops.Work on two sumps being constructed near Gangavaram village with a capacity of 27 lakh litres each is also progressing briskly.

On the other hand, J.C. Nagi Reddy project covering 514 villages in Tadipatri, Gooty, Singanamala and Dharmavaram constituencies is also making fast progress.
